Northern Day rescheduled to May 10

Please note that the INQ's Northern Day has been moved forward to May 10 and we are very excited to invite you to the Musée de la civilisation de Québec to participate.

On the scientific program for this event, a round table on the sustainable health of northern populations, enlightening discussions on caribou management and conservation, and the return of our science popularization contest My Northern Project to the stage.

A preliminary program will be released by mid-March.

An unsuspected network of underground exchanges

The subsoil of the forest is much more than a carpet of dead leaves and humus. Beneath the surface, sugars, mineral elements and hormones circulate in a double network of fused roots and ectomycorrhizae, as revealed by the work of Annie DesRochers, a professor at the Institut de recherche sur les forêts of the Université du Québec en Abitibi-Témiscamingue.

My Northern Project | Call for participants

Institut nordique du Québec invites graduate students working on a northern or Arctic theme to participate in the My Northern Project science popularization contest.

An exercise in scientific popularization and synthesis, My Northern Project /Mon Projet Nordique is a contest where students have 5 minutes to present, their northern research project.

The aim of the exercise: to popularise, inform and captivate!

To be won: a place at the international final of the competition, which will take place in Iceland during the Arctic Circle Assembly.

The INQ team is expanding!

The INQ team has expanded with the arrival of Pierre-Yves Savard, our new Operations Coordinator.

For nearly 15 years, Pierre-Yves, who holds a Ph.D. in biochemistry, worked as an assistant to the director and scientific coordinator at PROTEO, the Quebec research group on the function, engineering and applications of proteins. He has had the opportunity to visit the North on several occasions and has since developed a growing interest in the North and its issues.

Call for presentations: ÆLIÉS 4th Research day

L’Association des étudiants et des étudiantes de Laval inscrits aux études supérieures (l’ÆLIÉS) is proud to organize its 4th Research Day, with the theme "Research in Indigenous settings".

Illustrations from Quebec magazines: Expeditions to the Arctic Archipelago

In April 1902, the periodical l'Album universel published an illustration of the ship that Captain Joseph-Elzéar Bernier planned to build for his expedition to the North Pole. At that time, Captain Bernier had been working on this project for twenty-three years.

To learn more about Captain Bernier and the ship C.G.S. Arctic, Atiku and BAnQ present the collection of illustrations "Expeditions in the Arctic Archipelago". This corpus composed of about twenty illustrations from Quebec periodicals includes archival images of great explorers such as Fridtjof Nansen, their ships and scenes recounting the adventures of their expeditions.

Tide gauge | Valeport Tidemaster

For algal communities living under the ice of the Arctic Ocean, tides represent one of the three main sources of nutrients. They actively contribute to the seasonal expansion of primary production while affecting all living organisms in this fragile and unique habitat.

Increasingly challenged by climate change, the pelagic ecosystem of the Arctic Ocean is becoming an important site for primary production research. The work of scientists is not only to understand the dynamics of the ecosystems, but also to observe their response in the face of rapid change.

If tidal measurement is part of your current or future research, LAB-O-NORD presents the Valeport Tidemaster. This device allows you to measure the tidal variation by measuring the pressure of the water column height. Equipped with a pressure transducer and a 20 m cable, the tide gauge can be deployed in both fresh and salt water for up to one year.
